Kano State High Court sentenced a 19-year-old woman, Saudat Jibrin, to death by hanging for murdering her 30-year-old husband, Salisu
The court heard that the killing occurred just nine days after their wedding. Jibrin was convicted of culpable homicide.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Maryam Sabo held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. She subsequently sentenced Jibrin to death by hanging. The judge also informed the convict that she has 90 days to appeal the judgment.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the offence was committed on 5th May 2025 at Farawa Quarters in Kano. He alleged that at about 9 p.m., Jibrin laced her husband’s “Zoho” drink before slashing his throat with a knife.
According to the prosecution, the attack took place only nine days after the couple got married. Abba-Sorondinki also presented two witnesses in support of the case against the defendant.
Jibrin denied committing the offence during the trial. However, the prosecution maintained that the evidence presented before the court established her guilt. It argued that the offence contravened Section 221(a) of the Penal Code, which prescribes punishment for culpable homicide
Counsel to the convict, Abdulfatah Muhammad, pleaded with the court to show mercy. He said his client had become a changed person while in custody and had memorised the Holy Qur’an.
He also urged the court to consider that she is the eldest child of her parents. According to him, her younger siblings depend on her for their survival.
